What to pack for Timor-Leste

Six traveler types, six packing lists — plus health essentials, modesty guidance and what you can leave at home.

Overhead flat-lay of essential gear for a Timor-Leste trip
  • Dual climate
  • Reef-safe SPF only
  • Cash USD
  • Modesty matters

Pack for two countries at once

  • 8° S Latitude — UV bites year-round
  • 30 / 10 °C Coast day vs. highland night
  • USD Cash economy — small bills win
  • Net ✓ Mosquito nets recommended

Timor-Leste sits at 8° south of the equator, which means the sun bites hard year round and the UV index sits at 11+ for most of the calendar. The country has two distinct seasons (dry May–November, wet December–April) but the bigger packing question is altitude: Dili at sea level is 32 °C and sticky, while Maubisse and the slopes of Ramelau can drop into single digits at night. Pack for both.

Modesty matters away from the resort beaches — village visits, churches, government offices and traditional ceremonies all expect shoulders and knees covered. Pharmacies in Dili are decent but limited outside the capital, so bring anything you cannot do without. And remember: most reef-safe sunscreen, baby formula and specialist medication is hard to source locally.

Golden rule: Whatever you forget, you can probably buy in Timor Plaza (Dili). Whatever you pack heavy, you'll regret on the mountain pass.

Six travelers, six lists

Find the type that matches your trip — the lists below assume you're already carrying a passport, phone, and basic clothing, and focus on the items that actually make a difference here.

Year-round essentials

Whatever your traveler type, these four items should be in every bag arriving in Timor-Leste.

Reef-safe sunscreen

Timor-Leste is 8° S — UV index 11+ year round. Mineral formulas only (oxybenzone bleaches coral and is increasingly restricted).

Mosquito repellent

30% DEET or 20% picaridin. Dengue exists in Dili; malaria in some rural areas. Long sleeves at dusk help too.

Small first-aid kit

Travelers' diarrhoea kit, paracetamol, plasters, antiseptic wipes. Pharmacies in Dili are decent; outside Dili, very limited.

USD small bills

$5 / $10 / $20 notes work everywhere; $100s only at hotels and banks. No $1 notes — bring centavos coins from Dili before going rural.

Dress modestly off the beach

A note on modesty: For village visits, churches, government offices and traditional ceremonies: shoulders covered, knees covered. Beachwear stays at the beach. A lightweight sarong solves most situations.

Health & medicine

Dili has perhaps a dozen reasonable pharmacies, plus Timor Plaza's supermarket section. Outside the capital, expect very limited stocks of anything Western — even paracetamol can be hit-or-miss in mountain towns. Use the table below to plan what to bring versus what to source locally.

What NOT to pack

  • Heavy jeans — too hot, take forever to dry.
  • Hair dryer — most hotels supply one, and the voltage may differ.
  • Bulky guidebook — use offline apps and the Stays Traveler app instead.
  • Lots of $1 USD notes — they won't be accepted by most vendors.
  • Pre-2006 USD notes — refused almost everywhere, including banks.
  • Strong fragrances — mosquitoes find you faster.
  • Drones — bring permit paperwork if essential. Rules are tightening, and aerial use is increasingly restricted.
"Bring the basics, leave the rest at home — Timorese hospitality fills every gap you forgot to pack. The warmest welcome here doesn't need a single extra kilo." — Long-time host, Dili
Tip: The Stays Traveler app has a personalised packing checklist generator — pick your traveler type and trip dates, and it tells you what to pack adjusted for current weather.
